Fresh coffee is never still.
It keeps speaking for a while. Quietly, through steam.
It rises from the surface, slowly at first, then thinner than before. A thread, then a whisper, then nothing you could point to. You don't watch the steam leave. You only notice that it isn't there anymore.
The cup hasn't moved. The table hasn't moved. The room hasn't changed. The coffee still looks like coffee. Nothing asks you to think anything is different.
You reach for the mug the way you always do, without thinking, the way you reach for something you've never once worried about losing. Your hand doesn't check. It doesn't need to.
The warmth is different.
Not less in a way you can name. Just different. The kind of different your hand notices before your mind agrees to believe it. A pause where certainty used to be.
Only then do you understand that something had already been leaving long before your hand arrived.
The sip doesn't change the coffee. It introduces you to a change that has already finished.
Steam never leaves all at once. It simply rises a little less. Then a little less again. No single moment feels important enough to remember. No single glance feels like the last one.
And yet there is a last one.
One last thread of steam. One last moment the coffee is exactly as you wanted it. One last moment before the warmth begins belonging more to memory than to the cup.
Nobody notices that moment while it is happening. Only afterwards do we discover that it has already gone, and by then there is nothing left to hold onto except the shape of where it used to be.
The saddest part isn't the coldness. It's how ordinary the moment looked while it was happening. No music changed. No light dimmed. The room kept doing what rooms do, holding still, saying nothing, while something quietly finished.
You didn't leave the coffee. You were sitting right beside it. You just weren't there while it was growing cold.
The coffee was never the only thing that went cold.
If this one sat with you a little longer than you expected, I'd be glad to have you here for the next one.
