There are objects we stop touching.
A shirt.
A photograph.
A street.
A song.
Not because there's anything wrong with them.
Because they remind us of a version of life we'd rather not visit again.
We assume the object carries the pain.
Maybe it never did.
Maybe it was only carrying a memory.
And memories are strange.
They don't always disappear.
Sometimes they simply change their meaning.
The photograph that once made you cry eventually makes you smile.
The place you couldn't walk through becomes the place you quietly revisit.
The song you kept skipping becomes the one that reminds you how much you've grown.
Nothing changed on the outside.
The object stayed the same.
The meaning didn't.
Looking back, I wonder if healing is less about leaving the past behind and more about allowing the past to become something different.
Not every reminder is asking you to relive what happened.
Some are gently showing you that you survived it.
If this changed the way you think about old memories, I'd be glad to have you here for the next reflection.
