No bridge wakes up broken. It starts with something almost invisible. A loose stone. A thin crack. A little more weight than yesterday. People keep crossing it anyway because from where they're standing, it still looks strong.
That's how most relationships fall apart. Not through one big fight nobody forgets. Through the call that got postponed and then just stopped happening. Through promises that become easier to remember than to keep. Through two people learning, without ever deciding to, how to fall asleep without checking on each other first.
It's how the quietest relationship falls apart too, the one most people don't even name as a relationship. A prayer said a little later each day. A conversation with my Lord that used to happen without thinking, slowly replaced by silence that also happens without thinking. Nobody decides to walk away from that bridge. They just cross it a little less, one ordinary day at a time, until they forget it was ever load bearing.
By the time any bridge actually gives way, it feels sudden. It wasn't. The breaking happened on a Tuesday that looked exactly like every other Tuesday.
Fixing it was never going to start with better words. It starts with someone noticing the first crack before it learns how to become a ruin.
By the time someone finally stops at the edge and looks down, the bridge has already been asking for help for months.
Some bridges can still be crossed. Most people just wait until they're standing over the gap to check.
If you've been meaning to check on a bridge you've been avoiding, I'd be glad to have you here while you figure it out.
